This is my own diagnostic code reader pictured below which I use when asked to view a customers potential new vehicle it not only reads the engine ECU ( electronic control unit ) but the vehicles chassis number ( if the engine ECU has the chassis number stored in it ) this is ideal as another check for testing the authenticity of the vehicle ( you can check this against the log book and the chassis plate or in the front windscreen.

The booklet has the fault codes listed for you to reference as a guide .

I normally take a photo of the screen on the diagnostic machine to show the salesman and explain that the faults need to be replaced before the purchase of the vehicle , I also carry out another test before taking delivery . If you purchased a diagnostic machine you would be able to carry out the same checksum any car you go and view ( there are a number of apps you can download which will give you the diagnostic socket locations.
